*The Bully – Karma – And The Greyhound Pub*

Back in the days when the village was small,
There lived a tough lad who would frighten them all,
A bully by nature, with fists quick to fly,
And a glint in his eye that could tell you no lie.

He’d grown into manhood, but never grew kind,
With a talent for cheating and a devious mind,
He’d take what he wanted, whatever the cost,
And laugh at the poor souls who’d found they were lost.

I owned a green Jag, a fine 420G,
A beautiful motor, as proud as could be,
He fancied my Jaguar, I needed his van,
So we struck up a deal, as two grown-up men can.

His Vauxhall Van and my Jag changed their place,
But one hundred and fifty he owed me in grace,
Six months in the Greyhound, I’d remind him each night,
Till he cornered me quietly, out of the light.

“You know me, Fred, and you know what you’ll get,
That money ain’t coming, so just you forget!”
I knew what he meant, and I knew what he’d do,
So I walked away smiling, with a plan forming too.

Then later that year came a deal to be done,
Four houses to plaster, good work to be won,
“I’ll get you the contract, if you slip me my share,”
He grinned like a fox, quite convinced I’d play fair.

I plastered those houses, did a first-rate job,
Got paid every penny, no need for a sob,
Then back at the Greyhound, before all his mates,
He asked for his cut, quite forgetting the stakes.

“You know me,” said I, with a smile on my face,
“You’re not likely to see that commission take place,
I’ve settled your debt, and the interest as well,
So there’s nothing to pay you — now isn’t that swell?”

His jaw hit the floor, and his eyes turned red,
With a thousand of the curses he’d kept in his head,
But the fists that had ruled him seemed suddenly slow,
And he couldn’t decide if he dared let them go.

For six months the Greyhound saw no sign of his face,
No bully, no bluster, no king of the place,
And I’d sit there grinning, with my pint held high,
For revenge served up sweet needs no punch or black eye.

Oh, the finest of victories don’t need a fight,
Just a debt paid in full, karma, and a conscience held right,
Let the bullies beware, let the whole village know,
What goes round comes round — and the interest will grow!

*The Lament Of Reading Gaol*

Please Click The Image Above – And Follow Along Below:

Beside the Thames, where grey skies weep,
There stands a gaol where shadows creep,
Its ancient walls hold tales untold,
Of broken hearts and spirits bold.

Behind its doors, the years ran slow,
Through winter rain and summer snow,
Where iron bars and cold stone floors,
Kept countless souls behind locked doors.

Oh, reading gaol, oh, reading gaol,
Where stone walls stood and shadows fall,
Through tears and chains, through shame and pain,
The lost cried out in wind and rain.

Oh, reading gaol, your ghosts remain,
Their songs still echo through the rain,
Though locks lie cold and chains lie still,
Their cries ring out beyond the hill.

A poet walked those corridors of pain,
And watched the tears fall down like rain,
He heard the silence, felt despair,
And sensed the sorrow everywhere.

A soldier faced the gallows high,
Beneath the unforgiving sky,
His final steps, his final breth,
Became a song of love and death.

Oh, reading gaol, oh, reading gaol,
Where stone walls stood and shadows fall,
Through tears and chains, through shame and pain,
The lost cried out in wind and rain.

Oh, reading gaol, your ghosts remain,
Their songs still echo through the rain,
Though locks lie cold and chains lie still,
Their cries ring out beyond the hill.

Some came for crimes of greed and shame,
Some caught within a crueler game,
Some held for thoughts that dared defy,
The powers that ruled beneath the sky.

From distant shores, the Irish came,
With hearts aflame for freedom’s name,
Their hopes were strong, their cause held dear,
Yet walls of stone confined them here.

Oh, reading gaol, oh, reading gaol,
Where stone walls stood and shadows fall,
Through tears and chains, through shame and pain,
The lost cried out in wind and rain.

Oh, reading gaol, your ghosts remain,
Their songs still echo through the rain,
Though locks lie cold and chains lie still,
Their cries ring out beyond the hill.

The famous, fallen, poor and proud,
Were swallowed by that sombre shroud,
Each soul a story, each a scar,
Each dreaming of a world afar.

The years rolled on, the keys grew still,
The prison stood upon its hill,
Its doors fell silent, chains released,
Yet ghosts of memory never ceased.

Oh, reading gaol, oh, reading gaol,
Where stone walls stood and shadows fall,
Through tears and chains, through shame and pain,
The lost cried out in wind and rain.

Oh, reading gaol, your ghosts remain,
Their songs still echo through the rain,
Though locks lie cold and chains lie still,
Their cries ring out beyond the hill.

Now winds pass through its weathered stone,
And whisper tales of those alone,
Of cruel injustice, grief and grace,
And all who once had known that place.

So let the river carry on,
Beneath the same unchanging dawn,
For reading gaol shall e’er remain,
A song of sorrow, hope and pain.

# The Top 10 Famous and Infamous Prisoners of HMP Reading Gaol

HMP Reading, commonly known as Reading Gaol, has a fascinating and sometimes disturbing history stretching back to the Victorian era. It held convicted murderers, notorious criminals, celebrated writers and Irish political figures. Its most famous inmate was undoubtedly Oscar Wilde, whose imprisonment inspired one of the best-known poems in English literature.

The prison opened in 1844, closed as a working prison in 2013–2014, and is now a Grade II listed historic building. Here is a selection of ten of its most notable prisoners, ranked approximately by historical fame and notoriety rather than by the severity of their crimes.

# 1. Oscar Wilde

1895–1897 · Writer and playwright

Reason for imprisonment: Convicted of “gross indecency” under Victorian laws criminalising sexual acts between men. He received two years’ hard labour.

Wilde was transferred to Reading in November 1895 and became prisoner C.3.3. During his imprisonment, he wrote De Profundis, a long letter reflecting on his life and relationships. His experiences and the execution of a fellow prisoner later inspired The Ballad of Reading Gaol.

# 2. Charles Thomas Wooldridge

1896 · Soldier in the Royal Horse Guards

Reason for imprisonment: Murdering his wife, Laura Ellen Wooldridge.

Wooldridge was convicted and sentenced to death. He was executed at Reading Gaol on 7 July 1896. Although he and Wilde did not personally know each other, Wilde observed him in the prison yard. Wooldridge’s execution became the central inspiration for The Ballad of Reading Gaol, making him one of the prison’s most historically significant inmates.

# 3. Amelia Dyer

1896 · Infamous Victorian criminal

Reason for imprisonment: Murder of an infant in her care.

Dyer was a so-called baby farmer, taking money to care for unwanted babies. She became notorious for murdering infants, with evidence suggesting multiple victims. She was convicted of murder and executed at Newgate Prison in London on 10 June 1896.

Historical note: Dyer is widely associated with Reading’s criminal history, but the exact details of her custody at Reading Gaol are less firmly established in the sources than those of Wilde and Wooldridge. Her execution took place at Newgate, not Reading.

# 4. Arthur Griffith

1916 · Irish nationalist leader

Reason for detention: Suspected involvement in, and political association with, the Easter Rising against British rule in Ireland.

Griffith was a founder of Sinn Féin and later became President of the Dáil Éireann during the Irish independence period. Following the Easter Rising of April 1916, he was arrested and interned without trial at Reading Gaol. He was released on Christmas Eve 1916.

His story illustrates how the prison was used not only for convicted criminals but also for political detainees.

# 5. Terence MacSwiney

1916 · Irish republican and playwright

Reason for detention: Internment following the Easter Rising and his involvement in Irish republican nationalism.

MacSwiney was among the Irish nationalists held at Reading in 1916. He later became Lord Mayor of Cork and achieved international recognition in 1920 when he died on hunger strike in Brixton Prison after being imprisoned by the British authorities.

His detention at Reading was an early chapter in a life that became closely associated with the Irish independence movement.

# 6. W. T. Cosgrave

1918 · Irish political leader

Reason for detention: Internment associated with Irish nationalist activity during the struggle for independence.

William Thomas Cosgrave was among the Irish political figures detained at Reading. He subsequently became the first President of the Executive Council of the Irish Free State in 1922, effectively serving as its head of government.

His presence is a reminder that Reading Gaol played a part in the history of modern Ireland, as well as British criminal justice.

# 7. Darrell Figgis

1916 · Writer and Irish nationalist

Reason for detention: Internment following the Easter Rising.

Figgis was an Irish novelist, poet and political activist. He was held at Reading alongside other supporters of Irish independence. While imprisoned, he helped organise the internees and pressed for arrangements that recognised their political status.

His presence demonstrates that Reading’s political prisoners included intellectuals and writers as well as prominent party leaders.

# 8. Stacy Keach

1984 · American actor

Reason for imprisonment: A drug-smuggling conviction involving cocaine.

Keach, known for his extensive film, television and theatre career, was arrested in the United Kingdom in 1984 in connection with cocaine smuggling. He served a prison sentence reported as approximately six months at Reading.

His case is one of the better-known modern examples of an internationally recognised celebrity serving time at the prison.

# 9. Anthony Joshua

Around 2009 · Professional boxer

Reason for detention: Remand in connection with a case involving fighting and other trouble, according to Joshua’s own account.

Joshua spent approximately two weeks in Reading Prison while awaiting the outcome of a court case when he was 18. He later explained that the experience was a turning point in his life and helped motivate him to focus on boxing.

Important distinction: He was on remand, not serving a long prison sentence following conviction. He later became a two-time unified world heavyweight champion and Olympic gold medallist.

# 10. Henry Bushnell

1892–1911 · Repeat offender

Reason for imprisonment: Repeated petty theft.

Bushnell is a particularly interesting figure because he was one of Wilde’s fellow prisoners. Historical research has found that he was imprisoned at Reading no fewer than 21 times between 1892 and 1911.

Wilde took an interest in Bushnell and arranged for money to be sent to him after his release. His story offers a glimpse into the lives of ordinary working-class prisoners who otherwise might have disappeared from the historical record.

# A few fascinating facts about Reading Gaol

Oscar Wilde’s prison number was C.3.3.

Prisoners were identified by their cell numbers rather than their names. Wilde’s number later became part of his literary legacy.
.

A hanging inspired a major literary work.

Wilde’s The Ballad of Reading Gaol, published in 1898, reflected on the execution of Charles Wooldridge and the suffering experienced by prisoners.

The prison held political detainees without trial.

In 1916, approximately 45 Irishmen were held at Reading following the Easter Rising. Many later became important figures in Irish political life.

One final historical distinction: not everyone associated with Reading Gaol was a convicted criminal. Some, particularly the Irish nationalists of 1916, were interned without trial. And while Wilde remains the prison’s defining figure, Wooldridge’s execution is what gave the gaol its enduring place in literary history.

**Let The Wrinklies Roar**

Turn up the amps, let the old boys roll,
There’s a storm on the horizon and fire in the soul,
They’re talking ‘bout a Reset, they’re talking ‘bout time,
Saying fifty is the number when you cross that line.

They say, “Old timer, your memory’s done,
Your body’s just a number, your living is run,”
But we’ve danced through the decades,
we’ve lived through the pain,
And nobody’s taking our memories again.

Hey! Hey! — Can you hear that sound?
The old guard’s shaking but we’re still around!
Hey! Hey! — Let the speakers explode,
We ain’t ready yet for that compost road!

They’ve got a chip for your memories, wired to your brain,
A digital box to preserve what remains,
Every kiss, every heartbreak, every highway ride,
Stored in a circuit with nowhere to hide.

Then down to the compost, where the old bodies go,
Underneath the worms where the wild things grow,
Turn us into dinner for the bugs underground,
What a hell of a future they’ve got planned for this town!

Hey! Hey! — Can you hear that sound?
The old guard’s shaking but we’re still around!
Hey! Hey! — Let the speakers explode,
We ain’t ready yet for that compost road!

They call it progress, they call it the plan,
They call it efficiency for the modern man,
But somewhere in the shadows, behind every door,
You’ve gotta wonder who’s keeping the score.

**The Few! The Few!** — that’s the name they cry,
While the rest of us shuffle beneath their sky,
Just enough protein, just enough breath,
Just enough living till there’s nothing left.

But crank up the guitar, let the old records spin,
We’ve got a lifetime of rebellion within,
From Woodstock thunder to London town nights,
We learned that freedom was worth every fight.

So remember your memories, remember your name,
Don’t let a machine decide your place in the game,
For no silicon circuit, however divine,
Can bottle the fire of a human mind.

Hey! Hey! — We’re not fading away!
We’ve got one more chorus and something to say!
Hey! Hey! — Let the old engine roar,
We’ve been here before and we’ll be here some more!

So raise up your glasses, let the old speakers scream,
We’re still chasing freedom, still living the dream,
And if they come knocking with their grand new decree,
We’ll shout back together:…….

“You don’t own me!”

Very soon, Us Oldies won’t need to worry about remembering ‘anything’ because come 2030 and – ‘The Great Reset’ – 50 Years Old will be our ‘Expiry Date’ and We’ll walk into the ‘De-Funk’ Machine – Our Memories will be stored on Elon Musk’s  Neuro-Link Chip  and the old Bio-Mass that is our body will be designated a spot on the ‘compost heap’ that matures and ferments into food for ‘the food’ – Insects, Bugs, Worms etc …. That the remains of humanity will feed on to provide just enough protein to keep them alive during their subservience to;  **TheFew** …. Whatd’ya Reckon?? – EH? ….

**A Leather-Hearted Biker Child**

Fire in my heartbeat, dust upon my boots,
Thunder in the valleys, freedom in the roots.
Left the world behind me with the turning of the key,
The open road keeps whispering,
“You’ll always ride with me.”

Granite kings are watching from a thousand years of stone,
Out here on the moorland I am never quite alone.
Every mile reminds me what I came here searching for—
A leather-hearted wild child
Riding Dartmoor.

No chains…
No walls…
Just endless skies above.
No rules…
No crown…
Just the places that I love.

Hey!
Raise your hands into the sky!
We were born to live, not born to die!
Wind in our faces, fire in our souls,
Running with the thunder where the wild wind blows!

Whoa-oh…
Nothing’s gonna own me anymore!
Whoa-oh…
Hear me roaring with the moor!
Ride forever…
Free forever…
Hear these old hills call my name—
A leather-hearted wild child,
And I’ll never be the same!

Church bells keep on ringing but they cannot call me home,
My cathedral is the skyline where the hawk and raven roam.
Butterflies and heather dance beneath the summer sun,
And every road that’s unexplored
Is another race I’ve won.

Cashmere in the moonlight, biker boots of steel,
Camping where the silence teaches everything that’s real.
If the deer come wandering, I’ll simply nod and smile—
Every night’s an open road,
Every dawn another mile.

No fear…
No shame…
Just stars to light the way.
One life…
One ride…
I’m living it today.

Hey!
Raise your hands into the sky!
We were born to live, not born to die!
Wind in our faces, fire in our souls,
Running with the thunder where the wild wind blows!

Whoa-oh…
Nothing’s gonna own me anymore!
Whoa-oh…
Hear me roaring with the moor!
Ride forever…
Free forever…
Hear these old hills call my name—
A leather-hearted wild child,
And I’ll never be the same!

I’ve slept beneath the silver moon…
I’ve watched the morning rise…
I’ve traded all the city lights…
For freedom in my eyes.

If tomorrow comes to find me…
Let it find me standing tall.
I’d rather lose it everything…
Than never ride at all!

HEY!
Raise your voices to the sky!
We were born to live, not born to die!
Wind in our faces, fire in our souls,
Running with the thunder where the wild wind blows!

Whoa-oh…
Nothing’s gonna own us anymore!
Whoa-oh…
Hear us roaring with the moor!
Ride together…
Stand forever…
Every heart becomes the flame!

We’re leather-hearted…
Wild and free…
No one writes our destiny!

Hey!
Hear these old hills call our name!

A leather-hearted wild child…

Riding… DARTMOOR!

Leather-hearted… Wild child…

Leather-hearted… Wild child…

Ride…
Ride…
Ride…

“The Lament – Of The Jodrell Bank Telescope”

If we possess no watchful eye,
To scan the earth or silent sky,
No mighty lens to pierce the haze,
Or trace the paths through hidden ways,

Then who can say what drifts unseen,
Beyond the clouds or in between?

If you have watched the stage unfold,
Where whispered tales were bought and sold,
A drama dressed in statesman’s clothes,
With hidden scripts that no one knows.

A nation cast beneath the light,
Performing scenes from day to night,
Where every speech and every smile,
May mask another secret file.

If we possess no watchful eye,
To scan the earth or silent sky,
No mighty lens to pierce the haze,
Or trace the paths through hidden ways,

Then who can say what drifts unseen,
Beyond the clouds or in between?
What moves through air, what shapes the tide,
While ordinary folk abide?

The people ask, with furrowed brow,
Who guards our freedoms here and now?
Who keeps the watch? Who sounds the bell?
Who warns when all is not so well?

The voices rise in doubt and fear,
As louder questions fill the ear.
Why choose a figure so debated,
So fiercely judged, so widely hated?

Why hand such weight, such solemn trust,
To one who stirs both doubt and dust?
Was there a purpose, deep concealed,
A greater game not yet revealed?

Would allies falter, stand aside,
Or leave us stranded with the tide?
Would bridges burn through pride or spite,
Before the dark replaces light?

Some call it chance, some call it fate,
Some say we’ve wandered far too late.
Some see a plan behind the show,
While others simply do not know.

The curtain falls, yet still we stare,
Searching for answers in the air.
For truth is harder now to see,
When wrapped in grand uncertainty.

So let us question, let us think,
Before we stand upon the brink.
For history’s rhyme is often sung,
By those who keep their conscience young.

The Truckers Lament

You’re missing what they’re aiming for,
There’s something waiting round the door.
The road ahead is changing fast,
And old-world jobs may never last.

The engines hum, the circuits glow,
While human drivers watch the show.
The wheels keep turning, mile by mile,
With silent code replacing toil.

Hey!…
Can you hear those cold wheels roll?
Steel got no heart – got no soul!
.
Hey!…
Can you hear that warning bell?
Who’s buying? – And who’s gonna sell?

Electric lorries, sleek and bright,
Roll through the day and through the night.
Robot taxis crowd the lane,
Their numbers growing once again.

From distant shores the headlines sing,
“Automation’s now the king!”
The testing ends, the curtains part,
A brand-new age begins to start.

“So long, old mate!” the future cries,
As diesel smoke fades from the skies.
The faithful trucker shakes his head,
And wonders where the road has led.

Hey!…
Can you hear those cold wheels roll?
Steel got no heart – got no soul!

Hey!…
Can you hear that warning bell?
Who’s buying? – And who’s gonna sell?
.

“Stay home,” they say, “your work is done,
Here’s U.B.I. – have some fun.
Put up your feet, don’t break a sweat,
We’ll pay you wage … don’t you fret.”

Pick your nose or play online,
Watch the hours gently unwind.
Press a button, earn your keep,
While robots never need their sleep.

But something nags inside the mind,
“What sort of bargain have we signed?”
Is comfort worth the price we pay,
If purpose slowly slips away?

Hey!…
Can you hear those cold wheels roll?
Steel got no heart – got no soul!

Hey!…
Can you hear that warning bell?
Who’s buying? – And who’s gonna sell?

Then echoes from an old guitar
Still drift beneath a neon star.
“Money for Nothing” fills the air,
With knowing smiles and raised-brow flair.

It’s funny how the songs we knew
Can sometimes seem to echo through.
For life, it seems, has quite a knack—
Of borrowing art… and paying it back.

The Wrinklies Ruled! …
We Didn’t Listen.
To The Words Spoken Gently …
In the Rock-Bands Lyrics.

Funny how art can light the spark…
Then life walks in…
And plays the part.

SO! – Stamp your feet!
Clap your hands!
Nothing! – Ever stays as planned!

Raise your voice!
Raise your glass!
The future’s coming…
Fast!… Fast!! … FAST!!!

“Keep it in our hands, let the people choose,
A thousand different pathways, a thousand different views,
Together we are stronger when every voice can clash—
And every choice remains, including cash”.

Everybody’s moving at the speed of light,
Tapping little screens in the middle of the night,
But when the signal fades and the system lets go,
There’s an old friend standing that we all still know.

No passwords needed, no batteries to charge,
No complicated network run by someone large,
From the city lights to a country lane,
Cash keeps rolling through sunshine and rain.

For the young, the old, for every woman and man,
It’s a simple kind of freedom everybody understands.

Keep it in our hands, keep it in our hearts,
Don’t let a trusted way of living fall apart,
When the world spins fast and the future takes a dash,
There’s still something powerful in a pocket full of cash.

Keep it in our hands, let the people choose,
Different roads to travel, nothing left to lose,
Side by side with progress, standing strong and proud,
Cash is part of every voice within the crowd.

Helping little businesses open every day,
Keeping more of what they earn along the way,
Giving everyone a chance to take their place,
No matter who they are or what they have to face.

When the lights go out and the weather turns wild,
Cash keeps working, steady as a smile,
No waiting for approval, no delay in sight,
Just a fair exchange and everything’s alright.

Through the highs and lows, through the calm and storm,
It’s been there beside us in every shape and form.

It’s not about the past, it’s not about the fight,
It’s about keeping every option shining bright,
A little more resilience, a little more control,
A little more connection for every living soul.

Keep it in our hands, keep it in our hearts,
Every generation playing its own part,
Moving toward tomorrow while respecting what will last,
Building for the future without erasing the past.

Keep it in our hands, let the people choose,
A thousand different pathways, a thousand different views,
Together we are stronger when every voice can clash—
And every choice remains, including cash.

Keep it in our hands,
A pocket full of freedom,
A pocket full of cash.

Keeping cash available alongside digital payment options can provide a number of benefits for individuals, businesses, and society. Here are ten commonly cited positive reasons:

1. **Financial Inclusion**

* Cash allows people without bank accounts, smartphones, or access to digital payment systems to participate fully in the economy.
* This can include elderly people, low-income households, migrants, and vulnerable groups.

2. **Reliability During Outages**

* Cash continues to work when power failures, internet outages, cyberattacks, or payment network disruptions occur.
* It provides a resilient backup during emergencies.

3. **Privacy and Personal Freedom**

* Cash transactions generally do not create detailed digital records of purchases.
* Many people value the ability to make lawful purchases without extensive data collection.

4. **Budgeting and Spending Control**

* Physically handling money can help people track spending and avoid overspending.
* Some households use cash envelopes or similar methods to manage finances effectively.

5. **Support for Small Businesses**

* Cash transactions can reduce payment processing fees that businesses often pay on card transactions.
* This can be particularly beneficial for small independent retailers.

6. **Accessibility for All Ages and Abilities**

* Not everyone is comfortable with apps, online banking, or digital payment technology.
* Cash remains a simple and familiar payment method.

7. **Economic Resilience**

* Maintaining a cash infrastructure ensures the economy has multiple payment options rather than relying on a single system.
* Diversification reduces systemic risk.

8. **Immediate Settlement**

* Cash payments are completed instantly without concerns about declined cards, processing delays, chargebacks, or technical errors.
* Both buyer and seller know the transaction is complete.

9. **Emergency Preparedness**

* During natural disasters, severe weather events, or other crises, cash can be crucial when electronic payment systems are unavailable.
* Many emergency planners recommend keeping some cash on hand.

10. **Public Trust and Choice**

* Keeping cash available preserves consumer choice.
* People can decide for themselves whether they prefer cash, cards, mobile payments, or a combination of methods.

### In Summary

Cash serves as a backup payment system, promotes inclusion, protects privacy, and provides resilience during emergencies and technical failures. Even in increasingly digital economies such as the United Kingdom, many policymakers, consumer groups, and central banks argue that maintaining access to cash helps ensure that everyone can participate in economic life regardless of their circumstances. But What They SAY And Their Actual Intentions Are Miles Apart!
